Jasmine "Jazzi" Thornton (ジャスミン「ジャジー」ソーントン, Jasumin `jajī' sōnton) is the main overarching protagonist of the entire Save-Ums franchise who has served multiple roles throughout its narrative, as well being one of the first of its main characters to debut in its timeline. The leader of the titular team, she is seemingly a 5-year and 8-month old girl who serves as the older sister of B.B. Jammies, who she loves very much. She, along with Foo, serve as one of the two girls on the team. She is well-being and was always willing to help out anybody regardless of their problem or alignment.
First debuting in the 1920s Saga, Jazzi first served as the Mario Bros.' most recurring customer that ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom with them after discovering a warp pipe in their store. There, she would serve as the original companion of theirs who would fight bad guys with them, while also trying to keep the Mario Bros. safe, mostly whenever Luigi gets too cowardly and runs off.
In the second half of The Save-Ums! titled The Save-Ums: Bits and Pieces, Jazzi would be revealed (alongside the rest of her team) to be more than meets the eye as it turns out they're all actually █████████-year old immortal outer gods of extremely high power, and she takes the form of a purplin to disguise her true form. At the same time, Jazzi would make her team join the 𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 SUSiety once she learnt from Ka-Chung that about the truth about the Good Society since it turns out they weren't as great as they seemed thanks to Mickey Mouse being more of a tyrannical leader. That's literally how the second half of the narrative began. Jazzi would then serve as a major member of the society while still having her teammates by her side. Thanks to this, she would connect to the SUSiety's two leaders: 𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂𝓑𝓸𝓫 and 𝓓𝓪𝓯𝓯𝔂 𝓓𝓾𝓬𝓴 more and even help them out on their adventures, while also doing whatever she can to take down their enemies; all non-freakers such as the NPC Alliance. Jazzi would feel much more satisfied that she found a way to try to take down Mickey, who now serves as her enemy.
During her first few appearances in Bits and Pieces, she and Ka-Chung would find themselves against a team of no name bandits that have suffered from the Great Recession and at the same time would be haunted by members of the Anti-Horny Police. This would be the first of their multiple battles they'd manage to win. By the way, fun fact: her favorite food is chocolate. Her teammates frequently use chocolate to bribe her into doing dangerous missions for the SUSiety. Thankfully she's not as crazy as that one fish from that SpongeBob episode.
While most of the people she has worked with in the NPC Saga are mostly "come-and-go" characters, her most iconic pairing in the narrative has to be with Noodle since as the Save-Ums' two highest-ranking members, they tend to be very close to each other and eventually in Bits and Pieces, multiple events would cause the two of them to realize their true feelings for each other and they would become an adorable romantic pairing. Overall, Jazzi has been around since almost the very start of the narrative and will be around for the end of it, all the way until the end of Bits and Pieces.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Creation and Behind the Scenes[edit | edit source]
After the success of the pilot episode of The Save-Ums! titled Feline Follies, Sir JD Knudson would begin to plan his narrative, starting with the 1920s Saga. Many characters were conceived, including Jazzi, whom Knudson based on his own sister, Candace Knudson. JD Knudson had Jazzi as an "action" kind of girl from the start, but felt it should be developed throughout the story first, so he wrote her as an average, energetic girl that serves as the audience surrogate. Jazzi was intended to be named Melody instead, but a friend of Knudson suggested "Jazzi" instead, to which he thought sounded like a better name for the character.
| “ | Jazzi's leitmotif playing for the very first time, which would later be used multiple times throughout the Save-Ums franchise, most notably as the 2003 series' theme. | ” |
As with most characters of the time, Jazzi was designed with black dots for eyes. Unlike most cases, she never had a redesign because the animators deemed giving her sclera too disturbing. Jazzi would first appear in It Came From the Local Plumber Store, released on April 5, 1921, thus marking a start to the Super Mario Bros. series. The short deals with Mario, Luigi and their most recurring customer Jazzi discovering a hidden warp pipe in the plumbing shop and get sucked into it, eventually being tasked to help stop Bowser. The short was positively received by audiences and critics. Jazzi would serve as the Mario Bros.' main companion from this short until 1930, her tenure lasting 149 episodes and nine years. Her surname, Thornton, would be first revealed in The Rise of the Stars, released on September 23, 1928, while it would be revealed that her full first name, Jasmine, would be mentioned in The Shattered Star from the following year. After her depature, Jazzi would receive her own series that usually focused on her getting a job, only for it to mess up in some way. 195 theatrical episodes starring her would be released from 1930 to 1962. The series was a mix of comedy, adventure and action.
During production of her first appearance in color in 1936, she originally was meant to be colored with caucasian skin. However, one animator accidentally colored her purple instead, and everybody just went with it as Knudson didn't envision Jazzi as human from the start. It would never be mentioned in-universe until this year that Jazzi wasn't human. Meanwhile, the name of her species, purplins, wouldn't be revealed until 1940, and there almost wouldn't be any other member of the purplin species seen, heard or mentioned until 1944. In the same episode, she would begin being paired with B.B. Jammies. While they weren't intended to be related, their slightly-similar appearances and close relationship made audiences conclude that the two of them were related. This would be revealed to be true first by a crew member in 1937 and in one episode the same year.
Voice[edit | edit source]
As multiple people tried to cash in on the success of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse cartoons, Jazzi's first speaking appearance beginning 1929 was based on Minnie Mouse's voice, provided by Bea Benaderet. After originally being mute due to almost all episodes of her run as one of Mario's companions being silent, Jazzi originally had a slightly sweet, but falsetto voice. It eventually got lower and more confident overtime due to both Benaderet aging and Mickey's popularity dying out. Jazzi began being voiced by June Foray in 1955, where her perfomance was based on her predecessor, but the sweetness was dropped entirely. Jazzi's voice would evolve again as it began getting more mature, again due to aging.
The falsetto would be dropped as well by 1981 when Dana Hill took over, giving Jazzi a slightly tomboyish voice. Due to Hill's health, Alyson Court would take over from 1989 to 1999, using her natural speaking voice, with her successor Sarah Gordon sounding slightly identical to Court after she replaced her from 2000 to 2002. Since Rise of the Save-Ums in 2002, Jazzi's voice has been provided by Tajja Isen, who also provides her natural speaking voice for the character. Isen has also since voiced many counterparts of Jazzi, including her twin sister Glazzi. Jazzi's voice began to mature again overtime due to Isen, you guessed it, aging.
Biography and History[edit | edit source]
Appearances[edit | edit source]
Jazzi is one of the few characters to appear in all nine sagas in The Save-Ums! and all eight acts in The Save-Ums: Bits and Pieces.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Jazzi's origins are a complete mystery. Being around for eons and eons, she naturally has amnesia as a result of this and doesn't have any memory or recollection about her past. Nobody knew who she was before the franchise began, nor has she left any trace of fingerprints or DNA within any database, so her early life is speculation. As a result, when and where she was really born is unknown. Jazzi tends to pass off forgetting her early life as calling it "embarrassing memories."
Jazzi doesn't remember who her actual parents are, but all she knows is that before Mr. Dink adopted her and her little brother, they were raised by someone with the last name Thornton, which eventually just stuck to her. Due to their death and as stated, Jazzi and B.B. Jammies would begin to be raised by Mr. Dink.
General Information and Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Physical Appearance[edit | edit source]
Jazzi is a short purplin girl with black bead eyes and three strands of orange hair tied in pigtails by two blue hairbands (she's otherwise bald, we don't know how that works either) and wears a blue jumpsuit with orange details and blue and white sneakers. Her jumpsuit has the team's emblem on it, as her badge and on her gray belt. She has only a single block of teeth at the top of the inside of her mouth. Her body is rather rubberhose-like as a holdover from her early appearances. Originally, she had a more bigger mouth but it became smaller by her fourth appearance within the story because the animators thought it made her look stupid as a result of this. The idea of her having a big mouth would be carried over to her twin sister.
When travelling with Custard in the Zoomer, Jazzi wears a blue-and-yellow helmet with the team's emblem and two holes to accommodate her pigtails.
Personality and Traits[edit | edit source]
Jazzi originally started off as an average person that the audience can relate to, but she would come off as protective towards any of her allies when they're in trouble. She eventually developed into a loud but energetic action girl that can take down anybody she considers her enemy with her physical combat skills. At the same time, Jazzi is a friendly, kind-hearted and well-rounded person who doesn't really stress about things, but sometimes she might make a few dry remarks, usually being few and far between. Because of Jazzi's feistiness and impulsive nature, she is often the Save-Um who leads the charge and articulates the group consensus. She can also be tough and fearless, but at the same time Jazzi has a love for puns and multiple episodes show she has a pun ready for every occasion, and she even claims that Ka-Chung's love for puns is one of the reasons they're such good friends. Whenever her team is in danger, Jazzi will go out of her way to protect them as she very much loves them all equally.
While she describes her intelligence as "regular", she occasionally is given bouts of high intelligence for comedic intent, but this depends on the writer. For example, one episode had her think manually pushing a 2006 Honda Civic in park mode is possible. Despite Jazzi's occasional stupidity, it's stated that she only pretends to be naïve and ditzy because she wants to trick normies into thinking she's a regular person. In her spare time, Jazzi likes to draw, and while they originally started off as random scribbles reminiscent of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff done out of boredom, they eventually became of Norman Rockwell quality, showing that she is really good at drawing.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Hänsel and Gretel[edit | edit source]
Whenever 𝓓𝓪𝓯𝓯𝔂 isn't around, Jazzi tends to hang with the twins a lot and even comforts them with their severed fucked up trauma, considering Jazzi is an ex-hero herself.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
Allusion[edit | edit source]
- Real-world wise, Jazzi's action traits are based off of Kiva from Megas XLR. Much like Kiva, Jazzi also tends to protect Coop/𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂𝓑𝓸𝓫 and Jamie/𝓓𝓪𝓯𝓯𝔂 from themselves because of their stupidity, but she eventually warms up to them, learns to enjoy the things they like and she really does care about them a lot as a member of the 𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 SUSiety.
- Her role as the Mario Bros.' companions is an obvious reference to the concept of the Doctor's companions in Doctor Who. Specifically, due to being the original companion to the two brothers, Jazzi is slightly based off of Susan Foreman, the original companion of the First Doctor.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
- Her name simply comes from the jazz music genre, which itself likely evolved from the slang term "jasm" (or "jism") meaning "energy, pep, spirit," appearing in the 1860s, with early 20th-century usage in baseball (a "jazz ball" pitch) before moving to music around 1913, initially as "jass". Alternatively, it came from the jasmine flowers, which itself comes from Old French jessemin, derived from the Middle Persian word yāsaman and yāsamīn (يَاسَمِين) in Arabic. The word entered Middle French around 1570 and was first used in English in 16th century England. Jazzi's surname, Thornton, is of English origin and derives from the Old English elements thorn, meaning thorny bush, and tn, meaning town or settlement. Therefore, her surname Thornton can be understood as from "the thorny town" and her name overall can mean "jasmine flowers in the thorny town".
- Fittingly enough for the former case, Jazzi is rather energetic.
Story[edit | edit source]
- Jazzi is the only member of the team to have any kind of education. The others don't have any and therefore are morons.
- She is a massive bitch when she's on her period.
- The canon episode "Save That Sandman!" reveals Jazzi has thalassophobia, since she was nervous about the waves. However, she gets over it by the end of the episode.
- She notes that going to Wave World is a different experience, which sorta justifies why she doesn't fear going there.
- Fan art often gives her massive tits, but in the series she's flat-chested. And you know who loves flat chests, don't you?
- Although she isn't shown to have ears, her pigtails are shown to drop whenever she's sad. This has been shown a few times as the story goes on, such as in the canon episode "Danger: Sticky Food!" for example.
- Until Bits and Pieces, the writers couldn't figure out if she preferred Custard or Noodle when the Save-Ums formed.
- Jazzi's zodiac sign is Libra.
- Jazzi's name is changed to Jiji in the Korean dub because her original name sounds too similar to jaji (자지), which translates to "cock" in English.
- She doesn't even have one, ironically.
- The badges on her jumpsuit kept switching positions in her early appearances in the 2003 series. This later eventually stopped once the animators agreed how it should be.
Character & Design[edit | edit source]
- Jazzi is the only member of her team to resemble a human.
- Jazzi spends most of her appearances in the first half of the narrative without her emblem on her outfit and wouldn't gain them permanently until Rise of the Save-Ums.
- Despite being made purple since her first color appearance, Jazzi otherwise has very bright skin in her black and white appearances, implying that the idea of her being caucasian was there from the very start. This was further hinted at since multiple posters for the Mario Bros. episodes in color also had Jazzi colored caucasian, as did the 1981 colorisation for Mushroom Kingdom 101 (1921). Strangely enough, the 1982 colorisation for The Rise of the Stars (1928) has her purple instead, much like her modern appearances. It is unknown if this was unintentional or not.
Media[edit | edit source]
- For some amount of time, it was very debatable who had the one voice everyone associates Jazzi with. When Bits and Pieces came out and ended up being even better than its predecessor, Tajja Isen was agreed by many Save-Ums fans to be the voice for Jazzi.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
- This is the first page overall created on Save-Ums Fanon Wiki. Fittingly enough, Jazzi is the main overarching protagonist of this show's lore, so of course her page would be made first.
- Jazzi is the only Save-Um to appear in the black-and-white era of the series as her teammates otherwise didn't appear yet.
- Jazzi and 𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂𝓑𝓸𝓫 are the only two characters to appear in all acts in both halves of the narrative.
