SpongeBob "GoodBob" SquarePants (b. July 14, 1986[1]) is the main protagonist and the eponymous character of the Nickelodeon animated comedy series of the same name. He was designed by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, and is voiced by Tom Kenny. SpongeBob's a childish, joyful, eccentric sea sponge who lives in a pineapple in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. He works as a fry cook at The Krusty Krab, a job that he is exceptionally skilled. SpongeBob lacks a lot of knowledge and is a constant annoyance to those around him (especially Squidward Tentacles), but he is very good natured. His neighbors are Squidward Tentacles, who lives in an Easter Island head and is constantly annoyed by SpongeBob, and Patrick Star, his best friend, who lives under a rock. SpongeBob believes Squidward is his friend despite Squidward’s obvious dislike of him. When SpongeBob first arrived in Bikini Bottom, a pineapple fell from a boat above and landed where Squidward’s garden had been, and SpongeBob happily chose it as his home.
SpongeBob works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, Bikini Bottom’s most popular restaurant, where he prepares Krabby Patties with extraordinary speed and skill. In the first episode, “Help Wanted,” he is hired after successfully feeding a swarm of anchovies using a hydrodynamic spatula he was sent to find as a joke. He treats his job with extreme passion, has won hundreds of Employee of the Month awards, and is shown to have had cooking talent even as a baby. His boss, Eugene H. Krabs, is greedy and underpays his employees, while Squidward works as the cashier and dislikes both the job and SpongeBob’s enthusiasm. Despite this, SpongeBob deeply respects Mr. Krabs and remains devoted to his work.
Outside of work, SpongeBob spends most of his time with Patrick and Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas who lives underwater in an air-filled Treedome and shares his love of activities like jellyfishing and karate. SpongeBob also attends Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, where he has failed his driving test countless times due to panic behind the wheel. Although he is friendly and well-meaning, many citizens of Bikini Bottom find him exhausting, even creating a “National No SpongeBob Day” to get a break from him. Throughout the series, he is portrayed as childish, energetic, and endlessly optimistic, with a wide circle of friends, unusual talents, and a life centered around fun, friendship, and his love for making Krabby Patties.
He appears in almost all of the episodes in the series. He later was soon to be Nickelodeon's main mascot.

An alternate SpongeBob exists in a world where Plankton was successful. Like his mainstream counterpart, he likes his career, likes promotions and gets sad when he makes an error in someone's order. The most significant difference is that he was made co-cashier by Plankton and is employed by him.
An alternate SpongeBob is mentioned in every short of the series, What if SpongeBob was Gone is one example: without him, Gary threw a humongous party that ended in disaster; Patrick in this universe cannot hunt jellyfish properly; Sandy gets injured when playing karate and the Krusty Krab ends in ruins and all would say except Gary, everything's better with SpongeBob.
Other SpongeBobs exist throughout non-TV media (see SpongeBob SquarePants in popular culture).
SpongeBob also has friends from other universes as shown in the video game Nicktoons Unite and its other sequels, Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island, Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots and SpongeBob SquarePants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom. In these games, he and Patrick befriend Timmy Turner (as well as his fairy godparents Cosmo and Wanda), Danny Phantom, Sam Manson, Tak, ZIM, XJ9/Jenny, Stimpy, Jimmy Neutron, Tucker Foley, Goddard, Rocko, and Gir.
Characteristics
SpongeBob SquarePants is a cute sea sponge, but he is drawn to resemble a kitchen sponge, being rectangular and bright yellow with a dark brown outline. In earlier episodes (i: e Hillenberg-era), he is wider near the top and gets skinnier going further down, but in more recent episodes, he is more of a regular square shape. SpongeBob is a short, square-shaped sea sponge who more closely resembles a kitchen sponge. He has bright yellow skin with a wavy outline and many deep-yellow holes scattered throughout his body: seven on his face, four on each of his sides, nine on his back and five on top of his head. He has very large, blue eyes with three black eyelashes on each eye. He has a wide mouth with a red interior, a visible chin, pink tongue and two white buckteeth on his upper jaw. His nose is long and points upward and he has three red freckles on each of his cheeks. He also has long, thin limbs that end in small hands and feet. For attire, SpongeBob wears his signature square pants that consist of a pair of light brown shorts, a white, short-sleeved collared shirt and a red necktie. He also wears a pair of squeaky black shoes and white, knee-length socks, each with one blue stripe and one red stripe. While working at the Krusty Krab, he wears a tall, white hat with a small blue anchor on it as a uniform. SpongeBob sometimes sleeps in his underwear, and at other times pajamas (beginning in Season 5). Though SpongeBob has always been voiced by Tom Kenny, his voice has changed over the course of the series; his voice is lower than normal in the pilot episode, Help Wanted and after the movie, his voice gets slightly higher-pitched. And also, SpongeBob never passed Boating School.
Personality
SpongeBob is a very clueless, abnormal, immature, fun loving and hyperactive character with a happy-go-lucky personality. He is an extremely determined person, and will often stop at nothing to accomplish a task. He is also somewhat dramatic to the people who are kind to him, for example, to the mailfish. Karate Island He is also over-confident. Sometimes, though, he shows his devious side when trying to get Mr. Krabs and Plankton to work together. He sometimes tends to make mountains out of molehills, such as losing his name tag, in Missing Identity
SpongeBob is very kind-hearted and innocent, and very rarely acts openly mean to anyone, even his enemies. He is a very selfless and loyal person, especially towards those close to him. His selfless nature is most notably shown in "Best Day Ever," where he sacrifices his "perfect day" to help his friends. Despite his well-meaning intentions, SpongeBob's actions often annoy and cause trouble for those around him, most notably his next-door neighbor, Squidward Tentacles.
SpongeBob can become scared easily and usually panics when frightened. He is afraid of the dark (or what's in the dark) and clowns. Occasionally, SpongeBob is too ignorant to notice impending danger and his unworldly thinking may put himself or others in peril. He also can't detect lies or malice information as easy as the other characters, mainly due to his naive nature.
SpongeBob's innocence also makes him overly trusting and very gullible, and he is easily manipulated by people who intend to use and/or harm him, such as Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Plankton; most noticeably, he is always easily fooled by Plankton no matter how bizarre or obvious his disguises are. Even though he's generally good-natured and easygoing, when frustrated and angered, SpongeBob can be sarcastic, rude and 'foul-mouthed' to his friends, even Mr. Krabs, whom he treats as a father figure. Ironically, Squidward is the only character that SpongeBob never insults when he's angry, with the exception of the episode Can You Spare a Dime?.
In the context of fanon, SpongeBob's personality remains largely true to his original character traits of being quirky, optimistic, and always eager to help others. However, due to the unique and sometimes fantastical situations he finds himself in, his personality may be tested and evolve in various ways as he faces challenges and interacts with new characters. SpongeBob's core personality traits of being optimistic, kind-hearted, and always striving to do good may shine through, even as he faces unique challenges and adventures in his underwater world. SpongeBob is very energetic, fun-loving, and naive sponge. Despite this, he does know right from wrong, as he did of approve of Mrs. Puff being called a 'big fat meanie" and does not tolerate insults. SpongeBob is shown to be a hard worker, immensely dedicated to his job and even enjoying it. Always finishing a job and not wishing to stop working. When something is meant as a punishment, he often enjoys it if it involves working overtime, showing he is quite responisble. However, he does appear to have standards as he is shown to be exhausted by overworking. He is also somewhat childish, enjoying to play games and watching cartoons. He is also somewhat naive, as he does not realize Squidward and Mrs. Puff's annoyance of him. he is also shown to be somewhat cowardly, as he is easily frightened when the lights are off or when he encounters a ghost. He is also a bit sensitive, as he can easily be made cry. SpongeBob is overall a friendly individual, wishing to be a friend with anyone around him, even if they don't see him as their friend. He is also very supportive and caring to his friends and family.
Powers
Relationships
Friends
Patrick Star
Patrick is SpongeBob best friend, neighbor and coworker. SpongeBob first met Patrick in their childhood and learned that Patrick had no friends, leading to how the two became friends. They have the common interest of jellyfishing, blowing bubbles and even watching Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. Now and again, the two get into a fight that "ends" their friendship, though it is never enough to separate them permanently. Overall, the two appear inseparable.
Gary the Snail
Gary is SpongeBob's pet snail. The two share a bit of a father-son relationship. Gary can sometimes be annoyed by SpongeBob or refuse to take a bath, though the two do care about each other.
Squidward Tentacles
Squidward is SpongeBob's neighbor and coworker. SpongeBob considers Squidward his "friend" though Squidward, in reality, actually finds SpongeBob rather annoying, something SpongeBob is completely oblivious to. While the two will cooperate from time and again, Squidward will always return to disliking SpongeBob.
Sandy Cheeks
Sandy is a close friend of SpongeBob. The two first met in Kamp Koral and SpongeBob was the one to convince Sandy to pursue her dreams of being a scientist. SpongeBob will often times act as Sandy's lab partner. Though Sandy has had her share of being annoyed by SpongeBob, the two remain close.
Mr. Krabs
Mr. Krabs is SpongeBob's boss. SpongeBob looks up to his boss and Mr. Krabs appears to favor SpongeBob over his other employees, likely because SpongeBob is the hardest worker.
Enemies
Bubble Bass
Bubble Bass is SpongeBob's sworn enemy. The two often do not get along with Bubble Bass messing with SpongeBob as a means of getting free food. However, SpongeBob will always come back and show Bubble Bass up.
Plankton
SpongeBob and Plankton have a complicated relationship. SpongeBob often tries to keep the secret formula out of Plankton's reach. However, unlike Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob does this purely out of dedication to his job and has no personnel vendetta against Plankton. He is also shown to consider Plankton a friend when outside of work, though Plankton often does not view SpongeBob this way.
Family
Harold and Margaret SquarePants
Harold and Margaret are SpongeBob's parents. In his childhood, SpongeBob was very close to his parents, even learning his skills in life from them. As an adult, SpongeBob seems to wish to impress his parents as he acts more mature than he actually is and often does not realize they are already proud of him. He loves and relays on his parents, even wishing to stay with them when his house was temporarily destroyed.
SpongeTom SquarePants
SpongeTom is SpongeBob's older brother. In their childhood, SpongeTom often felt overshadowed by SpongeBob, something SpongeBob himself was unaware of. Despite this, they did get along, even inventing a game together and were both equally amused by their father's mishaps. As adults, SpongeBob reveals that he had always look up to his brother, prompting the two to reconcile and fix their relationship, SpongeBob even attending his brother's wedding.
Grandma SquarePants
Grandma SquarePants is SpongeBob's grandmother. SpongeBob enjoys when his grandmother bakes for him, reads him stories and the sweaters she makes him. However, when in public, SpongeBob can be somewhat embarrassed by this.
